You will spend a half day outside with an experienced guide learning how to descend from the top of a cliff with a rope and modern climbing gear. You will gain knowledge of basic rappelling skills, rappel extensions, third hand back ups, and fireman belays. Emphasis in this course will be how to descend a rope in the most secure manner possible, while working to mitigate a variety of hazards that rappelling presents. In addition to rappelling, this course will also focus on some other ways to descend. We will talk about some non-standard rappels, as well as efficient ways to clean bolted anchors. This course will be split between on the ground training, and actually descending ropes. Gain confidence navigating rappels on various terrain, and do so utilizing best practices. Don’t skimp on this skill.
Meeting Location
we will meet at 275 New Britain Ave, Plainville, CT 06062, in the lot below the Starbucks. We will get geared up there, and then drive the ~2 minutes to the cliff.
Do I need any climbing experience?
Absolutely not! All abilities are welcome to this event. We do encourage those who sign up to have some amount of climbing experience, but that isi’t required. This course is all about going down, and very little time will be spent climbing back up.
